Sumner is Christchurch’s definitive summer suburb, and after opening our newest restaurant there we’re totally in love with everything about it. The locals are friendly, the sun is warm and there’s a great little business community. We’ve got a short list of all the best things to do in Sumner.

1. Hit the beach!
With a beautiful expanse of sand stretching from the Clock Tower to Shag Rock, the beach makes for a great walk at any time of day, with some Instagram-worthy spots to stop and snap a pic along the way, particularly the impressive Cave Rock halfway along. Pro tip: You can walk your dogs at the far north and far south end of the beach, even in summer when dogs are banned from the main beach.

2. Surf it up
Sumner is one of the most popular surfing spots in the South Island, with a regular swell that’s perfect for learning on, and a great surf school run out of a van parked by the beach. There are also big break days for the advanced surfers out there.

3. $15 lunch from your favourite Sumner Indian restaurant
It’s the perfect way to enjoy a lunch by the beach. Grab one of Coriander’s Sumner’s awesome takeaway lunch deals – that’s a main curry with rice and naan bread for just $15 – and head down the esplanade to claim a picnic table and eat by the beach with your friends and family.

4. Icy goodness!
It wouldn’t be a day at the beach without a refreshing sorbet. Coriander’s Sumner serves up fresh, tangy and – most importantly – cold sorbet to get you ready to face the heat. We’ve also got freshly-made Mango Lassi to take away.

Whatever brings you to Sumner this summer, be sure to stop by Coriander’s Sumner for a delicious and authentic Indian dining experience in this awesome little seaside suburb.
